After the display of ceramics we come to the art of
the statuary. At the Archaic period (from the VIIIth to the VIth centuries
B.C.) The “couroi”* (statues representing young men) were rigid. They
were taller than real life, naked, smiling slightly, arms clinging to
their bodies, fists clenched, one leg slightly moving forward in front of
the other. This sort of statue may have been influenced by the Egyptians. (*singular
