THE NATIONAL MUSEUM

After the display of ceramics we come to the art of the statuary. At the Archaic period (from the VIIIth to the VIth centuries B.C.) The “couroi”* (statues representing young men) were rigid. They were taller than real life, naked, smiling slightly, arms clinging to their bodies, fists clenched, one leg slightly moving forward in front of the other. This sort of statue may have been influenced by the Egyptians. (*singular « couros »)
