THE  ERECHTHEION

The northern portico, as opposed to (idée de contraste?) or opposite (idée de place?) the porch of the Caryatids, is made up of an elegant Ionic colonnade, the architrave and the frieze are made of blue marble from Eleusis. Above there is a coffered ceiling, the doorway is sumptuously ornamented. This portico housed the rock where Zeus's thunderbolt had left its mark, and an altar dedicated to Zeus.
