THE
EAST FRIEZE,
the right section : BM (slab 5). The last scene , in the middle of
the East frieze (just above the entrance to the temple) represents the
presentation of the “peplos”: a bearded man, clad with a long chiton,
is receiving from a young boy the neatly folded peplos; on his left, a
woman is facing a young girl, carrying a stool on her head. The peplos is
meant to array the old wooden statue of Athena with, in the temple of
Erichthonios and it is not for the beautiful statue , made of gold and
ivory,(chryselephantine) which is to be found inside the Parthenon.
