THE  PANATHENAEA

THE EAST FRIEZE, the right section : BM (slab 5). The last scene , in the middle of the East frieze (just above the entrance to the temple) represents the presentation of the “peplos”: a bearded man, clad with a long chiton, is receiving from a young boy the neatly folded peplos; on his left, a woman is facing a young girl, carrying a stool on her head. The peplos is meant to array the old wooden statue of Athena with, in the temple of Erichthonios and it is not for the beautiful statue , made of gold and ivory,(chryselephantine) which is to be found inside the Parthenon.
