THE NORTH FRIEZE: ACR (slab 2). Two heifers (one of them is being restive) are intended for the sacrifice and are lead by three men. The hecatomb (the slaughter of 100 oxen) was the supreme offering to the goddess Athena. The colonies or tributary towns,(allied) to Athens provided most of the cattle that was meant to be sacrified. |
