| THE
      NORTH FRIEZE :
ACR (slab 6). The procession consisted of many bearers of offerings: women
carrying baskets (called canephorae), or phials (libation vessels),or of
oenochoees (jugs to pour wine)… and all the objects that
were to be used for the sacrifice.

      The
Metics (foreigners in Athens, therefore without citizenship) were admitted
in the procession, men carried bowls , full of sacrificial objects. The
women carried parasols, others (the diphrophorae) carried seats, certainly
for the gods. Here , youths are carrying bowls "hydries" , full
of libation wine, the last one is stooping to pick up his vessel unto his
      shoulder.
