THE FRIEZE OF THE PANATHENAEA

The frieze of the Panathenaea is about 5 feet long. It is carved on marble slabs, one meter high. It is composed of 500 figures (originally painted bright colours). The procession begins at the West side of the temple; it is divided in two groups: one going northwards and the other one southwards. Both groups converge on both sides above the entrance of the East side, the gods looking down upon the procession. Click on the frieze to discover a few slabs.
