Most
of the temples are rectangular (but some are round too), they are nearly
always orientated Eastward-Westward so that the rays of the rising sun may
fall on the statue of the divinity standing opposite the doorway (on the
day when the god is celebrated). The size of the temples may be different
from one another , they are classified according to their columns on the
façade: the Parthenon possesses eight columns; it is called
“octastyle” (octa = eight, style = column).
It
is also to be mentioned that all the architectural parts: metopes,
triglyphs, statues, capitals, pediments were painted bright colours (blue,
red, gold,…) |
