The metopes of the Doric frieze of the Parthenon are
sculptured in high relief(that is to say that they don’t completely
stick out of their support as a sculpture on the round) on marble slabs
which are 1m25 (4feet2inches) wide,1m20(4feet) high and about 35cm(1 foot
2 inches) thick and they usually consist of two figures. Here, one of the
metopes of the South frieze represents the fight between a centaur (on the
