THE METOPES OF THE DORIC FRIEZE

The metopes of the Doric frieze of the Parthenon are sculptured in high relief(that is to say that they don’t completely stick out of their support as a sculpture on the round) on marble slabs which are 1m25 (4feet2inches) wide,1m20(4feet) high and about 35cm(1 foot 2 inches) thick and they usually consist of two figures. Here, one of the metopes of the South frieze represents the fight between a centaur (on the left) and a lapith .(this metope is to be found in the British Museum, in London)
