In the Doric style, the frieze is ornamented with
sculptures , alternatively triglyphs (3 vertical flutes) and metopes (rectangular
sculptured frames). Originally, there used to be 92 metopes. Today, most
of them have been mutilated or are unrecognisable; others have been
plundered ( 15 of them by Lord Elgin). This frieze represents the fight
between the gods and the giants, on the East side; the fight between the Lapiths
and the Centaurs on the South side; scenes of the Trojan war on the
North side and the fight of the Greeks against the Amazons on the
West side (here). |
