On the left are ostraca, ceramic fragments  on which were written the names of those whose banishment from the city was desired (hence the word «  ostracism » because  they were judged to be dangerous to democracy. One can  read  Themistocles or Pistratus ? about this(click to enlarge)
To the right, a « cleroterion » a machine for  distributing lots for a drawing ; candidates inserted their nameplates into numbered slots Each slot had a corresponding  numbered ball ; the order in which the balls came out determined  who was chosen as héliaste.
