      Acropolis is in Athens a hill , reserved to the gods, more particularly to
      the goddess Athena, the guardian of the city. Many temples, which were re-built
      after the second Medic wars, are to be found there. the Persians having
      destroyed the previous shrines. The works began in B.C.449 when Pericles
      had the Ecclesia vote the project of the re-building of a veritable marble
      town for the gods. Phidies, the great sculptor, carried out the works
      which went on for over twenty years. |
