THE 14  OTHER  METOPES

To enlarge the 14 other metopes (on the South frieze) which are to be found in the British Museum, in London, click on the photographs. Each of these metopes recalls the fight between the Lapiths and the Centaurs. The Lapiths blonged to a lengendary etnic group from Thessalia; at the king Pirithoüs’s wedding party, they started a fight with the Centaurs, who, being drunk, wanted to abuse the Lapiths’wives. The Lapiths, with the help of Theseus, defeated the Centaurs. Herakles got entirely rid of these legendary creatures (the centaurs), half-man, half-horse, but he lost his life as he wrapped himself with the poisoned cloak. of the centaur, Nessus.
